Importance of Basic and Applied Research
There has been a great focus on development with the help of innovation in science and technology during the past century. This development was backed up by advancement in both the basic and applied research that took the world to the betterment of human life. However, it has been observed that government funding to support basic research is less and mostly depends on specific, measureable short-term objectives. Government is of the view that applied research is more relevant to the welfare of the people and society. On the other hand there is also an argument in favor of applied research that it is difficult to predict and forecast the benefits of basic research to bring progress in societal good.
Point of discussion:
Think from the angle of researcher and solve the dilemma – which one to prioritize; basic and/ or applied research? Generate number of arguments to support your stance.
Applied research is a form of systematic inquiry involving the practical application of science. It accesses and uses some part of the researchcommunities’ (the academia’s) accumulated theories, knowledge, methods, and techniques, for a specific, often state-, business-, or client-driven purpose
Basic research (also called pure research or fundamental research) is a systematic study directed toward greater knowledge or understanding of the fundamental aspects of phenomena. Basic research is executed without thought of a practical end goal, without specific applications or products in mind.
